I haven’t been a mom for a long time but mom’s day 2013 is definitely one for the books. If you ask most moms, their number 1 mother’s day request is to relax, feel pampered and special. I got all of those and so much more!

Our little family (and friends) spent the weekend at a farm in Poughkeepsie. Called the
Sprout Creek Farm, it is a working farm, an educational center for kids, a market, and a sanctuary. I have always been a city gal and it looks like my daughter is going to be one too so it seemed to be a great idea to drive north for an hour and stay in a cottage in rural New York. We were not really “roughing” it, as the cottage comes with a complete kitchen, 3 bedrooms and 2 baths so we had a comfortable stay. But there was no TV… just farm life, conversations and laughter to keep us occupied.

The kids had so much fun running on open fields, petting the farm animals and playing with each other. All the kids do not have siblings and it was their first time having a “sleepover”. It made my day seeing Lucy’s eyes bulge with amazement and scream with delight every time she interacts with the animals for the first time.

The adults, on the other hand, got to help feed them, watched how the goats and cows are milked, and was given an overview on how the farm is run. We found out that they do not raise bulls as they are very disruptive to the cows. So what happens if a cow gives birth to a male calf? They are eventually sent to the slaughter house. My husband was pretty shocked by this :).

Did I forget to mention that Sprout Creek Farm also produces award-winning cheese? As a cheese-lover, I was pretty thrilled about this. Their cheeses are being sold at Whole Foods and Murray’s in the city. We had their best selection waiting for us when we entered the cottage. Also for Mother's Day, they served brunch using ingredients that they either raised or grew. It really made the difference as everything was so fresh and delicious.

Everyone had the best of time. We are thinking of coming back or maybe sending Lucy for
Summer Camp when she gets older. I can't say it enough, this place is quite a gem.
